Auto-glass guide

Clear answers to the most common auto-glass questions – explained simply by the pro in Freiburg.

Repair the chip or replace the glass?

A chip can usually be repaired if it is smaller than a 2-euro coin, outside the driver's direct field of view and does not touch the edge of the glass. Once cracks form, the damage is in the field of view or reaches the edge, the glass must be replaced. When in doubt, our free cost check helps.

What does comprehensive cover pay for glass damage?

Glass damage is usually covered by comprehensive (Teilkasko) insurance. You only pay your agreed excess – a repair is often completely free, because insurers encourage the cheaper repair. Importantly, glass claims do not raise your no-claims discount. We handle the process with your insurer.

Why must the camera be calibrated after a windscreen replacement?

Many vehicles have a camera behind the windscreen for assistance systems such as lane-keeping or emergency braking. When the glass is replaced, the camera's angle shifts slightly – enough for the systems to work inaccurately. That's why proper recalibration is required after fitting. With us, it's part of the service.

How long does a windscreen replacement take?

The replacement itself takes about 2–3 hours. The special adhesive then needs to cure; your car is usually ready to drive after 3–4 hours – often the same day. A chip repair is much faster at 30–60 minutes.

Window tinting – what's allowed in Germany?

The windscreen and front side windows must remain sufficiently transparent and may only be covered with approved films. Behind the B-pillar – rear side windows and rear window – tinting is freely selectable. We use only certified films with valid approval so your vehicle stays TÜV-compliant.
